Monika Sozanska was born on March 13, 1983, in Poland. From an early age, her talent for movement and rhythm was evident—first in ballet, later in ballroom dancing. At the same time, she excelled as a diligent student and played the piano. However, her life took a dramatic turn at the age of eleven when her family relocated to Germany.

Her father, a fencing coach, had moved to Germany a year earlier to establish a new life and eventually brought his family to join him. For Monika, this marked not only the start of a new life in a foreign country but also the beginning of her journey in fencing. Initially a shy girl unable to speak the language, she faced numerous challenges. Yet, with remarkable determination, she overcame these obstacles, throwing herself into the sport with passion. Before long, she celebrated her first tournament victory—a pivotal moment that set the foundation for her extraordinary career.

As time went on, Monika’s training intensified. She embraced the discipline and responsibility required by competitive sports and was especially captivated by the idea of joining the national team, traveling the world to places like China, Australia, the U.S., and Cuba. These global opportunities became her greatest motivation. After years of dedication, she qualified for the national team in 2005, shortly after earning her German citizenship in 2004. That same year, she claimed her first World Championship medal and cemented her place in the sport’s elite with a World Cup victory in Saint-Maur.
For the next twelve years, Monika was a permanent member of the German national team. She achieved numerous individual and team successes, consistently ranked among the world’s top 16, and collected medals at World and European Championships.

Her ultimate dream, however, was to compete in the Olympic Games. After narrowly missing qualification for Athens and Beijing, her perseverance paid off in 2012 when she qualified for the London Olympics. Ranked fifth in the world and first in Germany, Monika proudly represented her country on the sport’s biggest stage, realizing a lifelong ambition.
While pursuing her fencing career, Monika also navigated a demanding academic journey. Arriving in Germany without speaking the language, she started at a lower-tier school but worked diligently, taking additional language courses. She quickly progressed to higher-level schools, ultimately earning her high school diploma. She began studying art history and English at the University of Stuttgart but later switched to a dual degree in business administration and service management, which she completed successfully. She further rounded out her education by earning a Bachelor of Arts from the Open University.

Monika Sozanska is not just an extraordinary athlete but also an inspiring individual who has consistently demonstrated the courage to follow her dreams—both in sports and in life.
Challenges and a New Beginning
Monika’s remarkable sports career was marked by triumphs but also by profound challenges that tested her resilience. One of the most significant setbacks came in 2019 when a devastating ACL injury derailed her journey to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The injury forced her to undergo surgery and endure nine months of intensive rehabilitation. Her determination never wavered as she fought her way back to compete at the national level.
However, the physical pain persisted, and the emotional toll of constant setbacks began to weigh heavily on her. By early 2020, Monika realized she needed a break. Planning a short ten-day trip to Bali to recharge, she found herself stranded on the island as the global pandemic unfolded, grounding flights and upending her plans.
What began as an unplanned pause became a turning point in her life. While staying on Bali, Monika reflected deeply on her career, her health, and her future. She began to question the toll of her relentless pursuit of excellence and whether it aligned with her long-term happiness.

In September 2020, after much soul-searching, Monika made the difficult decision to retire from competitive fencing. Letting go of her life as an elite athlete was bittersweet but also opened the door to a new chapter.
With no clear roadmap, Monika remained on Bali and allowed herself the time to rediscover who she was beyond the sport. Surrounded by the island’s serene beauty and vibrant culture, she embarked on a journey of self-reflection and healing.
During her time on Bali, Monika also faced a deeply personal tragedy. She became pregnant but suffered severe complications that forced her to terminate the pregnancy in her fifth month to protect her health. The loss was devastating and became the greatest challenge of her life. However, drawing on the discipline and mental strength she had developed through fencing, she committed herself to the difficult process of emotional recovery and inner healing.

Through this journey, Monika reconnected with herself in ways she hadn’t experienced before. She realized that her years in elite sports, while rewarding, had caused her to lose sight of her inner needs and desires. She began to prioritize values like self-love, mindfulness, and personal growth, reshaping her vision for the future.
Monika’s healing process took her to South America and later back to Bali before she returned to Germany. Each step deepened her connection to herself and clarified her path forward.
Despite these transformations, Monika’s creative passions remained constant. Since 2017, she has been designing and selling her fencing-inspired jewelry line *MOSIKS*. The brand reflects her love for the sport and her artistic sensibilities, blending elegance with strength. She also channels her passion for fencing into coaching and organizing corporate workshops, which serve as unique team-building experiences. These endeavors allow her to stay connected to the sport she loves while inspiring others.

Today, Monika has redefined her relationship with life and with herself. She has learned that true strength lies not just in overcoming challenges, but in embracing change, navigating transitions, and staying true to one’s values. Her story is one of resilience, transformation, and the courage to start over—with clarity and purpose.

Drawing on her experience as a high-performance athlete and the insights gained through major life transitions, Monika now works as a coach and speaker. Supporting others on their path—especially in times of change or high pressure—has become a meaningful part of her work. She sees it as both a responsibility and a privilege to pass on what she has learned. Helping others grow, lead with focus, and act with integrity—this is where her expertise creates lasting impact.
